Introducing Ollee – a virtual friend (ParentZone/BBC Children In Need)

Ollee is a digital friend for children aged 8-11, created by Parent Zone and funded by BBC Children in Need’s A Million & Me initiative, which aims to make a difference to children’s emotional wellbeing.

It’s designed to help children reflect on how they feel and to process their experiences with the support and help of their parents and carers – and it does this by offering them advice about a range of subjects: school, family, friends, their body, the internet and the world.

For each of these subjects, children can choose an emotion that matches how they feel about it: happy, angry, sad, confused, frustrated, stressed or worried.

Next, they can choose from a list of topics – for instance, a child who was worried about school might be able to select ‘I haven’t done my homework’ as the cause of their worry. Finally, they’ll see a page of advice about the topic, presented in child-friendly bite-sized chunks they can read then or save for later.

You can more information and download the Ollee app here: https://parentzone.org.uk/Ollee

A message from South Yorkshire Police

My name is Dannielle Lee, I work within the Digital intelligence and Investigations Team at South Yorkshire Police as a Cyber Protect Officer. Part of my role is to work with young people who are involved with cybercrime to  make them aware of the Computer Missus Act 1990, the consequences and help steer them onto using their skills that are high in demand for good. Also, to work with parents/guardians, teachers and youth workers to help identify any possible young adults who are involved in carrying out cyber crime and to work together to provide mentorship and support towards educating them to use their talent legally and try and prevent re-offending.

Another part of my role involves delivering cyber crime protection information to communities and businesses across the South Yorkshire area through presentations, meetings and telephone calls. Also, I provide advice and support to previous victims to prevent them from becoming a repeat victim.

If you have an interest, talent or curiosity in gaming, coding or other cyber related disciplines then there are a range of helpful online activities available to ethically test, challenge and develop your cyber skills, whether or not you are considering a career in tech. So why not give it a go?

BBC Own it App

The BBC Own It keyboard and app can help kids enjoy the internet and connect with friends much more safely.

Guidance and support during online chat - the special keyboard can be used like any other keyboard, but it also offers advice to children as they type and intervenes to support children with tips and advice.  The information and guidance can help your child with their fears and emotions around a wide variety of subjects.  The keyboard works on all messaging/social platforms.

Wellbeing – writing down how you feel has proven benefits.  The app has an easy to use diary feature and mood tracker that helps kids express themselves in a fun way and manage their emotions.

Connecting with others - The keyboard is packed full of gifs, emojis and conversation suggestions to help young people express themselves or even to swerve the conversation.

Entertainment – there’s loads of other fun stuff for kids to enjoy including quizzes and videos – which will also help them make the best decisions in their online life.

Privacy  - Everything that your child types is kept completely private, and never leaves the Own It app.

The BBC Own It keyboard and app is free to download from the Apple and Google Play app stores. It’s ad-free and there are no in-app purchases.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Kind regards
